Clarkie’s Health & Happiness | Vet Visits, Training & Daily Routines

Raising a beagle in London comes with its challenges—they’re energetic, stubborn, and always on the lookout for their next snack-based heist. But keeping Clarkie happy and healthy is my top priority, so I’ve learned a few tricks along the way.

Here’s how I manage vet visits, training, and daily routines to keep my mischievous beagle in top shape.

1. Choosing the Right Vet & Insurance

Finding a good vet in London can be overwhelming, but I quickly learned that location matters. When Clarkie had an ear infection, I was grateful to have a vet within walking distance instead of stressing on public transport.

Top tips for picking a vet:
✔ Choose one near your home (trust me, you’ll thank yourself later).
✔ Ask about 24/7 emergency services—some practices are linked to out-of-hours clinics.
✔ Look for a vet with experience in beagles—they have common breed-specific issues (ears, digestion, and weight control, to name a few).

Pet Insurance? 100% worth it. Beagles are curious and a bit reckless, so having insurance means I don’t panic every time Clarkie eats something suspicious.

2. Training a Beagle: Patience Required

If you know beagles, you know they train when they feel like it. Stubborn? Yes. Smart? Absolutely. With Clarkie, I’ve learned that:

🐾 Short, fun sessions work best – Five minutes of training is better than a long, frustrating battle.
🐾 Food is the best motivator – But I mix it up with praise so he doesn’t just work for treats.
🐾 Consistency is everything – Beagles will try to negotiate. Stick to your rules, or they’ll quickly learn loopholes!

Biggest win? Teaching Clarkie “leave it”—which has saved many dropped snacks (and my shoes) from being stolen forever.

3. Our Daily Routine: Keeping Clarkie Happy in London

Mornings start with a brisk walk—partly for exercise, mostly so Clarkie doesn’t start howling for attention. Beagles need mental and physical stimulation, so I mix up his day with:

Enrichment toys – Snuffle mats and puzzle feeders keep him entertained.
Training refresher sessions – Just five minutes a day helps reinforce good behaviour.
Social walks – Beagles love company, so we often meet dog friends at the park.

By 7 PM, he’s usually curled up on the sofa, snoring like a tiny chainsaw—proof that a well-exercised beagle is a happy one.

Final Thoughts

Owning a beagle means embracing their quirks, keeping up with their energy, and always being one step ahead of their food-stealing plans.

Clarkie keeps me active, makes me laugh daily, and brings a little chaos into my otherwise structured city life—and I wouldn’t change a thing.
